Hello! Welcome to the online home of Roy Stannard.

I have now spent over half a century as a confirmed adherent and advocate of freedom – spiritually, mentally and politically. This has meant many life and career changes but few regrets.

I am proud of my two fantastic sons, Callum (20) and Dominic (17). Callum is at Queen Mary College, London studying Comparative Literature and Dominic (College Union President and Youth MP for East Arun, Worthing and Adur) is at Worthing College studying A Levels.

The Past

After leaving teaching I worked in the recruitment industry for six years before moving into advertising, first in Eastbourne with GSBA Ltd and later with AWP Communications in Chichester.

When I left teaching I helped set up Worthing Hospital Radio which spawned a bid for a full-time licence for Brighton in 1995/96 as New Wave Broadcasting.

107.7 Splash FM became Worthing’s very own radio station on the 5th September 2002 and started to broadcast on May 5th 2003 from studios in the centre of the town.

In January 2003 I took on the role of MD of Splash FM with the task of taking it to air in May. After three enjoyable years, the call of the wild beckoned again. In September 2006 I took over Spring Marketing as MD -  a company I set up with two partners in Nov 05. I was founding Chairman of the Worthing Business Partnership -Worthing First – set up in Nov 04 to drive the future economic success of Worthing. I was also on the Board of the Worthing Evolution Masterplan – the blueprint for development in the town centre for the next decade. I spent nearly three years in an Industry that I realised didn’t care for the way I do business – personally and with a lot of myself built in.

The Present

Perhaps it was watching Series Three of ‘Madmen’ on TV that did it. Perhaps it was feeling the loss of not working in a creative team; perhaps I just love the cut and thrust of advertising. After meeting with Neil Macadam, David Smith and Jon Dudley of Zerofiftyone - the Brighton-based agency, I knew that it was time to return to where I’m happiest - making people’s products more popular through words, images and sound. We spoke the same language. The glove fitted.

I  joined Zerofiftyone in January 2011 after nearly two very happy years at Powerchange, where I was privileged to work alongside Andrew Sercombe, helping forge the direction of the company – including the definition of Auto-Response Psychology. Understanding why people do what they do and helping them to change (if they want to) has been an amazing experience. Enabling individuals to reclaim control over the levers of their lives has been a fascinating and rewarding experience. Putting that knowledge into a context where marketing and business development also operate has been equally intriguing. I now understand much better why buying decisions are made, what the influences are on those decisions and how to shape the proposition so that customers feel enthusiastic about the purchasing experience.

Unsurprisingly, this has led me back down the route of advising companies and people within them on how to adjust their product and the way it is presented to the market. Imagine how it would be to have your product repositioned and enhanced in marketing terms – and to have your own approach to that process renovated.

An Invitation

Zerofiftyone is a full service advertising agency that remembers what good ad agencies are supposed to do. It enthuses about the projects it takes on, creates great ideas and delivers integrated advertising across the platforms of digital, radio, print, TV and DM in a way that makes clients feel good about what they do. It's been around for a couple of decades so it's grounded, confident about what it does and populated by real people with opinions who don't just parrot back what you say to them. You remember when talking to your agency was fun?

It would be nice to catch up and hear how you are. I’m working with people who have run radio stations, played cricket for Sussex and been involved in the local design industry for a quarter of a century. It’s a great receptacle of talent of experience. If you would like to stay in touch professionally, socially or personally, that would be great. Drop me a line - let’s get together soon. Reply to this email. Let’s make make history together.
